2005. Meg Ryan, directed by Jane Campion
I am sure that everyone is saying the same thing, and I always hate to join a chorus - 'Meg Ryan in the nude?' I guess if I were going to take my clothes off on screen I would rather do it for Jane Campion than anyone - at least she makes serious movies. Ryan does make it look effortless and artless, as she always does. There's an excellent scene where Ryan is watching someone with a three of spades getting a blowjob and Campion makes us visually unsure of whether we are looking at a tattooed penis or a tattooed wrist, at a blowjob or fisting. She really is a master of visual metatext. I like it that Campion is wandering off to traditionally male territory (the murder movie) and doing it more intriguingly than I have seen it done before. I have been handed the slop in so many different formats that I don't know where to hide. Especially because I think a murder movie is the very definition of escapism, ' relaxing in front of the TV'. Campion didn't let me get away with that attitude. She kept me strung like a harp(ie).
